Fatal fire under investigation

HEMPSTEAD – A fire that killed one and injured several others has been ruled accidental.  The fire happened in Hempstead on Saturday, February 09, at 6:22 A.M.

The Hempstead Fire Department with responded to a fire at 9-17 St. Paul Road North for an apartment building fire. It took 300 firefighters from West Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Uniondale, Elmont, Roosevelt, Franklin Square, Lawrence/Cedarhurst, South Hempstead, North Merrick, East Meadow, Mineola and North Bellmore Fire Departments and several hours to extinguish the fire. Eleven  victims were transported to area hospitals, nine of which were treated for non-life threatening injuries, one victim remains in critical condition and one victim was pronounced deceased.  

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification and the results of the medical examiners’ report.  250 people have been displaced.

Detectives and the Nassau County Fire Marshall are deeming the fire, which originated in a 3rd floor apartment to be non- suspicious. The cause is undetermined at this time.  This investigation is ongoing.
