Driver charged with causing multi-vehicle crash that killed elderly man

SAYVILLE - Suffolk County Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that killed an elderly man in Sayville Sunday evening.

Thomas Herman, 46, was driving SUV westbound on Main Street through Sayville at approximately 5:10 p.m., when he struck five vehicles. He did not stop and, moments later, he simultaneously struck westbound eastbound cars as he attempted to drive between them in front of 290 West Main St. 

The driver of the eastbound car, Sam Longo, 82, of West Islip, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His passenger, Ann Gilbert, 79, of Oakdale, was transported by Sayville Community Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she is being treated for neck and pelvic injuries. She is listed in critical but stable condition. The driver of the westbound car, Robert Schutt, 49, of Sayville, was treated for minor injuries at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue and released.

Herman, of 408 River Ave., Patchogue, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for neck, facial and internal injuries. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening. He has been arrested and is being charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and leaving the scene of an incident. Further charges may be considered as this investigation continues.

The investigation is continuing.  Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or any of the events leading up to this incident, to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.  All calls will be kept confidential.
