Fatal motorcycle crash blamed on hurricane

GARDEN CITY – Police say a traffic light, out because of Hurricane Sandy, may have contributed to a fatal motorcycle accident which occurred on Tuesday, October 30, at 8:25 P.M. in Garden City.

According to detectives, a 20 year old male was operating a motorcycle northbound on Washington Avenue with an 18 year old female passenger when he struck a van which was eastbound at the intersection of Stewart Avenue.  The traffic light at the intersection was out at the time due to a power outage.  The male operator of the motorcycle were transported to Winthrop University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  The female passenger was transported to an area hospital and treated for fractures to both arms.  No further injuries are reported.  There is no criminality suspected at this time. Both vehicles were impounded from scene.

Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
