Motorcyclist loses leg after collision; car driver charged with DWAI

WEST BABYLON - Suffolk County Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash in which a motorcyclist lost part of his leg after being struck by a vehicle driven by a man whose driving ability was impaired by drugs.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Raymond Card, 48, of Huntington, was riding the motorcycle northbound on Belmont Avenue in West Babylon when he was struck at the intersection of Van Buren Street by a car.  The driver of the car, James Kavanaugh, 22, of West Babylon, was attempting to make a turn from southbound Belmont Avenue onto eastbound Van Buren Street.

Card was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where doctors surgically removed his left leg below the knee.  Kavanaugh was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while his ability was impaired by drugs.
