Former fire department treasurer charged with stealing $200K
KINGSTON – The former treasurer of the Woodstock Fire Company No. 3 has been arrested and charged with felony grand larceny for allegedly embezzling over $200,000 over a five year period.
Dale Hughes, Jr., 64, is in the Ulster County jail in lieu of bail.
The thefts came to light in an audit by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright and DiNapoli announced the arrest in Kingston on Friday.
The audit and investigation revealed Hughes endorsed 83 checks totaling $200,385 that were made payable to cash. Auditors estimate he pocketed an additional $21,000 in cash from various pancake breakfast fundraisers.
Hughes served as the fire company’s treasurer from 1997 to 2011. He currently served as company vice president.
