Defendant sentenced for fraudulently obtained contracts set aside for disabled veterans |
|||||
NEW YORK – A man who claimed to be a veteran and disabled, but in fact was neither, was sentenced in Manhattan federal court to three years, five months in prison for defrauding the United States government in order to qualify for certain government contracts worth more than $16 million, and for his efforts to cover up that fraud. The defendant, identified only as John Raymond Anthony White, no age or address provided, was convicted in April 2011 after a five-day jury trial. White was neither disabled, nor had he ever served in the military, but he falsely claimed to be a disabled veteran in order to obtain the contracts. During the course of the investigation in this case, White made false statements to a federal agent claiming that another person who had served in the United States military was the majority owner of his company, Mitsubishi Construction Corporation. He then attempted to have that person falsely claim to the VA that he, and not White, was the majority owner of the company. |
