Guilty plea in hit-and-run fatal

ALBANY  - An Albany area man pleaded guilty in Albany County Court for recklessly causing the death of E. James Oki on November 26, 2011. 

Alfred Zwack Jr., 20, faces 3 1/3 to 10 years in State prison after pleading guilty to (1) Count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, and (1) Count of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting as a Felony, a Class D Felony.

At approximately 1:42am on November 26, 2011, Zwack recklessly cause the death of Oki when he drove at an excessive speed and over the double yellow lines on Quail Street in Albany.  After striking Mr. Oki, Zwack then fled the scene and failed to report the incident to authorities.

“In taking the life of Mr. Oki, Mr. Zwack took from our community the promise of a young man who had so much more to give”, said District Attorney P. David Soares, who thanked the Oki Family “for their strength and courage”. said DA Soares.

The trial against Zwack was scheduled to begin on September 24. Zwack remains in custody and will be sentenced on October 30, 2012.
