Woman flees checkpoint, hits taxi

LYSANDER - State Police arrested Derdria Hamel, 49, of Syracuse, for unlawful fleeing a police officer, driving while intoxicated, and numerous other vehicle and traffic violations.

At approximately 10:25pm Sunday, Hamel entered a DWI Checkpoint on I-81 ramp from 7 north street in the Town of Salina when she was told to pull to the side of the road.  Hamel refused to pull over as instructed and drove south on I-81.  State Police attempted to stop Hamel, but she refused to stop and continued south on I-81 and then exited onto I-690 east when she struck a taxi cab which was traveling east on I-690.  After Hamel struck the taxi cab, her vehicle became disabled.  She attempted to run from the scene.

Hamel was taken in custody at the scene and charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer  and driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors, and several other vehicle and traffic violations.  The driver of the Taxi Cab was transported to Crouse Hospital in Syracuse for minor injuries.
