Motorcyclist flees police, dies in crash with cop car

YONKERS – One motorcyclist is dead and two others are under arrest after an assault on a State Trooper during a traffic stop on the Tappan Zee Bridge late Saturday night and a subsequent chase that ended in Yonkers.

When the bikers fled the bridge, Westchester County Police became involved in the pursuit. Yonkers Police entered the chase when the motorcyclists crossed into city limits.

One motorcycle operator became involved in an accident with a marked Yonkers Police patrol car in the area of North Broadway and Lake Avenue. He was transported to a local hospital and later died. Four officers were injured during that incident and all were placed off duty. The name of the victim was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Another biker, Dennis Norwood, 51, of Brooklyn, lost control of his cycle on North Broadway while speeding, causing the bike to fall to the ground. Norwood stood up and when officers ordered him to the ground, he took a fighting stance with his fists raised. Officers struggled with him and eventually handcuffed and subdued him. Four officers were injured during the arrest.

Norwood was charged with assault, resisting arrest, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless driving and vehicle and traffic violations.

A third operator, Kenneth Hammond, 49, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, lost control of his bike and fell to the ground. He was taken into custody without incident.  Hammond was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer and several vehicle and traffic violations.
