Police officers rescue residents from house fire |
|||||
BRENTWOOD - Suffolk County Police officers helped bring residents to safety after a fire broke out in their Brentwood home early this morning. Third Precinct Patrol Officers Jesse Zuckerman and Paul Schreiber responded to a 911 call at about 1:00 a.m. when the five residents at 5 Hewes St., Brentwood saw smoke coming from the house. All five were outside in the swimming pool at the time, but two of the residents entered the house to rescue their two dogs that were inside. Once inside, however, they realized that they could not find their way out again due to the heavy smoke. One of the residents was on the first floor and was able to get out quickly with Police Officer Zuckerman’s assistance. The other resident, Adrian Gardener, 25, was on the second floor and was about to jump out of a window when Police Officer Schreiber called to him and told him to follow the light from his flashlight. When Gardener reached the officer, Officer Schreiber brought him the rest of the way down the stairs and out the door. The dogs managed to safely escape from the house on their own. None of the residents were injured, but the two officers had to be transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore to be treated for smoke inhalation. Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Arson Section conducted an investigation and the fire does not appear to be suspicious. |
