Westchester County man drowns in Delaware River

SPARROWBUSH –Efrain Campos, 42, has been rafting on the Delaware with his girlfriend, then went for a swim without a life jacket .

At about 4:15 p.m., as they neared a area livery destination a few miles north of Port Jervis, Campos decided to go swimming and removed his life jacket and sandals. His girlfriend lost sight of him, but did not see him go under water.

About 20 minutes later, she became concerned and took the raft to the shore to call for help.  Area fire department dive teams and a State Police helicopter were called in.  Campos’ body was located later in shallow water on the Pennsylvania side of the river and brought back to the New York shore.

Local police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug use present. Foul play is not suspected.
