Carting company officials and salvage owner arrested for recycling scheme

HAUPPAUGE -  Two managerial employees of a Long Island garbage carter and the operator of a salvage business for a scheme involving the illegal sale of recyclable paper and cardboard collected at curbside from Smithtown homeowners were indicted for their alleged involvement in a recycling scheme.  Jody Enterprises Inc. employees William Stegemann, 55, of Lindenhurst and Michael Dalessandro, 43, of East Patchogue appeared in court on Thursday

An ongoing investigation established that Stegemann and Dalessandro, instead of delivering the material to the Smithtown recycling plant, diverted the Smithtown cardboard and paper for under-the-counter cash payments from Joseph DeMatteo, 72, the owner and operator of DeMatteo Salvage in West Babylon.  DeMatteo, of West Islip, will also be arraigned tomorrow in First District Court.

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said the three are charged with grand larceny in the second degree.

“We have evidence these suspects have been profiting at the expense of Smithtown taxpayers by depriving the town of recycling revenue for at least the past two years,” Spota said.
