Two dead after plane crashes onto LI roadway

SHIRLEY - Suffolk County Police are investigating the death of a man following a single-engine plane crash in Shirley this morning.  Police received numerous 911 calls at 11:55 a.m. reporting that a plane crashed on Helene Avenue in Shirley. 

A man who was in the plane was pronounced dead at the scene.  The identification of the man that was killed in the crash is being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

Another passenger, Jane Unhjem, 60, of Goshen, died a few hours after the crash. 

Erik Unhjem, 61, also of Goshen, was injured and taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he is in serious condition.  No one on the ground was injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.  Officers from the Emergency Service Section, Suffolk County Park Police, Brookhaven Fire Department, Shirley Community Ambulance, Yaphank Fire Department, Ridge Fire Department and Mastic Ambulance Company assisted at the scene.
