Child found clinging to woman’s body in Putnam County lake

CARMEL – A six-year-old girl was rescued from Lake Gleneida in Carmel late Monday afternoon by three boaters when they spotted her screaming for help while clinging to a woman’s body.

The lake is owned by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Authorities said the child was wading or swimming in the lake with Pamela Kaner, 59, of Brewster. Two men and a woman in a row boat saw the child holding onto the Kaner's body in the middle of the lake and crying for help. She was not wearing a life jacket.

The boaters placed a life vest on the child and brought her to shore where they called Carmel Police. The child was not injured.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  The cause of death has yet to be determined.
