Police seize assault rifles and ammunition after man threatens security guard at marina

BROOKHAVEN - Suffolk County Police have arrested a Brookhaven man who threatened a marina security guard; Assault rifles, ammunition, and body armor were seized from the suspect’s home.

Thomas Lippens and his parents drove up to a security booth at Squassux Landing Marina, located on Beaver Dam Road in Brookhaven.  The group was initially denied entry into the marina by a guard at the booth because they did not have the proper key to enter.  Lippens, 24, became irate and threated the security guard, indicating that he would come back with a gun.  Lippens left on foot but returned on a dirt bike approximately 15 minutes later.  He brandished what appeared to be a handgun, threatened to kill the security guard, and fled on his dirt-bike at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Fifth Precinct Police Officer Jeremy Fanning questioned the victim and witnesses at the scene.  The officer was able to locate the vehicle, which was left in the marina parking lot by Lippens’ parents.  Officer Fanning ran the license plate information on the car and obtained Lippens’ address.  Fifth Precinct Police Officers Mike Campbell and Paul Parasmo went to Lippens’ residence, located at 7 Bond Lane, Brookhaven.  Lippens attempted to flee the residence when he saw the officers approaching but, after a brief struggle, the officers were able to detain him.  Officers from the Emergency Service and Property Sections also responded and helped seize ammunition and several weapons, including loaded assault rifles, Kung Fu stars and  knives.  A bullet proof vest and more than 20 marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia were also seized.

Lippens was charged with Menacing 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.  He is being held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned August 6 at First District Court in Central Islip.
