New Tappan Zee Bridge could have $14 toll

TARRYTOWN –  When the new Tappan Zee Bridge is built, the toll to cross the Hudson River between Rockland and Westchester counties could be $14. It now costs $5 to cross the bridge.

Town of Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner, whose town is on the east side of the bridge, called for a summit of elected officials from the two counties to discuss the projected toll hikes.

The TZ Bridge “should not be a bridge for only the rich,” Feiner said on Friday. “The projected increases are excessive – especially without bus or mass transit.” He said the toll would be “a tremendous burden for lower income residents” of both counties, for seniors and young people.

One suggestion, said Feiner, would be a discount card for commuters on fixed incomes.

He said Buffalo residents receive a discount on the Grand Island Bridge. Grand Island residents pay nine cents to cross the bridge while non-residents pay $1 per trip.

"Why does the Thruway Authority give residents of the Buffalo area a big discount on their local bridge and not do the same for residents of Westchester/Rockland?” Feiner asked.

He plans to ask the governor, two-county delegation of state lawmakers and local officials to sit down and discuss the new tolls.
