Good Samaritan comes to the aid of elderly robbery victim

MEDFORD - Suffolk County Police arrested two men who robbed a 70-year-old woman in Medford on Friday.

The victim was placing her groceries in the trunk of her vehicle when she was approached by a male. One of the suspects grabbed the victim’s pocketbook from her shoulder and attempted to steal it. The woman fought back, but the suspect shoved her to the ground and fled with the pocketbook at 5:25 p.m.

Several bystanders witnessed the struggle and began to chase the suspect through the parking lot of Sunshine Square Mall. One of the witnesses observed the male entering a vehicle that was parked across from the mall on Patchogue Yaphank Road and provided the responding Fifth Precinct officers with a description.

The officers located the vehicle and arrested Sean Hurney, of 32 Colonial Lane, Bellport, and Anthony Deprospo, of 80 Association Road, Bellport. Both males were charged with Robbery, 3rd Degree. Hurney was also charged with one count of Possession of a Hypodermic Needle. A portion of the proceeds were recovered inside the suspects’ vehicle.

Deprospo, 22, and Hurney, 21, are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 28.

The female victim received minor injuries that did not require medical attention.
