Fast food robber quickly caught

PATCHOGUE - Suffolk County Police arrested a man for robbing a Patchogue McDonalds restaurant and threatening the use of a gun Sunday afternoon.

Police allege Craig Gernett walked into the McDonalds located at 499 Sunrise Highway at approximately 1:05 p.m., walked to the counter, demanded money and verbally threatened violence, while making a motion that indicated he had a gun. The employee complied with Gernett’s demands, and handed him several hundred dollars. Gernett told the employee he was going to come back and kill her.

Gernett then ran across four lanes of the Sunrise Highway Service Road, and six lanes of Sunrise Highway, into the Shore Motor Inn, located at 576 South Service Road, Patchogue. A witness, who saw Gernett run across Sunrise Highway, thought it looked suspicious, and watched Gernett go into his hotel room.

The man alerted responding Fifth Precinct officers and told the officers what room Gernett went into. Police arrested Gernett at 1:37 p.m. He had a portion of the proceeds in his pocket.

Gernett’s last known address is a halfway house in Brooklyn. He is also wanted for an escape warrant by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Gernett was charged with Robbery 1st Degree. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 29.
