Drowning at Northampton Beach campground

NORTHAMPTON - The NYS Department of Environmental Conversation (DEC), in cooperation with the Fulton County District Attorney’s office and the New York State Police, is conducting an investigation into an apparent accidental drowning at the DEC Northampton Beach Campground and Day Use Area on Great Sacandaga Lake in the town of Northampton, Fulton County.

On July 22, 2012 at approximately 5:00 p.m. campground staff was notified by family members of a four-year-old child who was missing in the picnic area. The child had been in the water with other children in an unsupervised area of the lake away from the beach. Campground lifeguards, staff, and volunteers immediately began a search of the area.

The child was located in the water by a volunteer. Lifeguards immediately began CPR which was continued by the Northampton Rescue Squad upon their arrival at the scene. The Rescue Squad continued resuscitation efforts during the transport to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
