Fourteen injured in Hempstead fire

HEMPSTEAD  - Police and Fire personnel responded to 100 Terrace Ave. for an apartment fire on Sunday.  The fire was contained to the apartment but smoke caused the evacuation of the building.  Thirteen people were transported to local hospitals with smoke inhalation, with two in critical but stable condition.  Additionally a fireman was treated at the scene for a lacerated finger.

It was determined that fire was caused by an unattended candle left burning, by the occupant, 56,  who had fallen asleep.  Seven area fire departments responded to the scene with approximately 250 firefighters.  Approximately six families are displaced from their apartments with varying degrees of fire and water damage in the building.
