Man convicted of rape at Plaza Hotel gets ten years

NEW YORK - A man found guilty of several counts, including rape, is heading to prison.  Mustapha Ouanes, 61, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision for raping a woman in his room at the Plaza Hotel in Midtown on January 26, 2010.

Ouanes was convicted by a jury in February on the top count of rape in the first degree, as well as charges of criminal sexual act in the first degree, sexual abuse in the first degree, assault in the second degree, and attempted sexual abuse.

“The defendant sexually assaulted a young woman who was in a helpless and vulnerable state, and today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of that misconduct,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. “I thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward.”
