West Point grad killed in Afghanistan is laid to rest

WEST POINT – Major Paul Voelke came home Friday. The veteran of four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan died in Afghanistan on June 22 in a noncombat situation.  He was laid to rest in West Point Cemetery following a private funeral service.

Voelke, 36, a Monroe resident, was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and Afghanistan Campaign Medal.  He was assigned to the 1-30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team and deployed in February 2012 for nine months.

He is survived by his wife, Traci, and two sons.
