Capital region father, son arrested on federal weapon charges

NASSAU - The New York State Police Gun Investigation Unit announces the arrest of a father and son on federal weapons charges following a three month investigation.

State Police members executed a search warrant last evening at the home of David and Daniel Grinnell, 258 Radley Road, in the Town of Nassau, Rensselaer County.  Located within the residence were 16 long guns, some of which had been modified to make them illegal.  Some of the modifications included sawed off barrels, fully automatic firing capabilities and collapsible stocks.  Police also seized 9 hand guns and high capacity ammunition magazines.

Investigators from the State Police Gun investigation unit began their investigation 3 months ago when the New York State Police Intelligence Center received a tip through their CRIMETIPS website.  Gun Unit Investigators compiled evidence of illegal possession of non-compliant long guns and handguns at the residence which led to the issuance of a search warrant.

Neither of the Grinnell’s possesses a New York State Pistol license.

Both David Grinnell, 54, and Daniel Grinnell, 23, were arraigned in Federal District Court on charges of illegal possession of a machine gun.   Special Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms assisted with the investigation.
