Suspect in murder of Hudson Valley college student will spend at least 40 years in prison

POUGHKEEPSIE – The man, who killed Kathryn Filiberti of Hyde Park as she walked home from a party in the early morning hours of March 19, 2001, was sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison on Thursday.

Dutchess County Court Judge Stephen Greller sentenced Stephen Shand, 24, of Hyde Park after Shand apologized to the family in what Senior Assistant District Attorney Edward McLoughlin felt was not necessarily sincere.

Filiberti, who was 18 and in her first year at Dutchess Community College, was strangled and drowned by Strand after he offered her a ride home. The two did not know one another.

To compound the tragedy, Filiberti’s father, John, committed suicide six months after his daughter was murdered. He was 48.

McLoughlin said the sentence insures that Shand will spend a minimum of 40 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole and he does not believe he will get out at any time.

Shand was arrested on August 10, 2011 following an extensive investigation.
