Aide to NY rep resigns over inflammatory comment

WASHINGTON – Congressman Nan Hayworth (R-19) announced on Monday that her campaign advisor Jay Townsend has offered, and she has accepted, his resignation.

Townsend has been criticized for his “hurl some acid at those female Democratic senators” comment. He apologized, but critics kept hammering at Republican Hayworth and him.

In the wake of his resignation Monday, Hayworth said the public debate should “return to talking about issues that really matter to families: job creation, spending restraint and economic development.”

Townsend is a political consultant who ran an unsuccessful campaign against US Senator Charles Schumer in the last senatorial election.
