Lawmakers propose mandate relief measure for BOCES

OSSINING – In an effort to ease cuts in state aid to school districts, Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland-Orange) and Assemblywoman Sandra Galef (D-Westchester) announced legislation to help generate additional revenues for BOCES programs.

Their bill would reduce administrative overlap between neighboring school districts and provide opportunities for Boards of Cooperative Educational Services to offer professional development and career services in school districts, among other services, said Carlucci.

“It opens up with ordering states to allow them to contract to allow students into BOCES programs,” Carlucci said on Friday. “BOCES right now can only service New York State residents and because we are on the border with Connecticut, with New Jersey, we can have students paying tuition subsidizing the rest of the students, and in many cases keeping certain classrooms open.”

The proposal would find efficiencies and opportunities for BOCES to generate new revenue, said Galef.
