Repeat offender gets 25 years in prison for raping a child

MONTICELLO – A man with several prior sex-related convictions was sentenced in Sullivan County Court on Tuesday to 25 years in state prison and 20 years of parole for his convictions for the violent felonies, including two counts of course of sexual conduct against a child and rape.

Kevin Devault, 53, admitted to sexually abusing a child between 2000 and 2008 in Sullivan County. He was arrested by State Police on November 24, 2010 after an investigation.

In his sentencing argument, District Attorney James Farrell, pointed to Devault’s lengthy previous criminal record of indecent exposure and public lewdness arrests and convictions in other states and jurisdictions in 1978, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010.

He was also convicted of simple assault in Maine in 1991 which was sexually motivated when he entered the college dorm room of a female student who was undressing and assaulted her.

“This defendant and his documented history of sexual deviance presented a clear and present danger to the community and the 25 year prison sentence will ensure that he cannot harm another innocent person again,” Farrell said.
