Gillibrand outlines her Hire Heroes Act

NEWBURGH – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) brought her drive to hire veterans when they complete active duty to the Newburgh campus of Orange County Community College on Friday.

Gillibrand said the plan is to help provide education and job training for veterans and streamline certification processes for civilian jobs.

“It’s a matter of teaching them how to write a resume the way it makes a difference, teaching them how to interview to really promote their skills and really get them into the job market so they can provide for their families,” Gillibrand said. “The least we can do for these men and women is to give them the tools they need to provide for their families when they come back home.”

Fort Worth, Texas native former active duty Marine, now reservist, Billy Bearfoot, now of Newburgh, is enrolled in Orange County Community College.

“The main thing is just getting awareness to the veterans, letting them know that these benefits are here and take charge and use them to the fullest,” Bearfoot said.

The proposed legislation would provide more tuition assistance to veterans going to college and ease the hiring process for them.
