Suspect caught after using ‘skimming’ device to steal $8,400 from bank ATM

CEDARHURST – Suffolk County police report the Arrest of a man Saturday morning, in Cedarhurst.

According to detectives, on Saturday, April 21, 2012 an unknown person installed a skimming device at an ATM at the JP Morgan Chase Bank located at 446 Central Avenue Cedarhurst. The defendant, Mircea Popescu-Onea, age 25 with no known address then used the information attained to remove over $8,400 in U.S. currency from various customer accounts.

On Saturday, May 5, 2012 the defendant installed another skimming device at the same bank location. The device was removed by an unknown person. On Sunday, May 6, 2012 an unknown person installed another skimming device at the branch location and it was removed by the defendant.

Bank personnel observed Popescu-Onea on Saturday, May 12, 2012 checking a skimming device and notified the United States Secret Service. An agent stopped the defendant attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle and placed him into custody. The vehicle was impounded.

Bank customers are encouraged to review their accounts and report any suspicious activity to bank representatives.

Popescu-Onea was charged with grand larceny 3rd degree and three counts of unlawful possession of a skimming device. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.
