Food poisoning sickens several who attended a garden party

TOWN OF KENT – As many as 150 people on buses passing through Orange and Putnam counties became ill Sunday. Authorities believe it was food poisoning.

Police said 10 buses with 500 people left Chinatown in New York City Sunday morning to attend the Buddhist Day Garden Party at the monastery in the Town of Kent where they had lunch. Some 30 people took ill there, were treated and taken to local hospitals.

Some drove to Woodbury Common for an afternoon of shopping and that’s where 20 people became ill with signs of food poisoning. They were taken to three area hospitals.

Others on the outing felt ill later and drove to Westchester Medical Center for care.

Health officials said anyone who feels ill later should contact their doctor and any food taken home from the monastery should be discarded.
