Two counties consider pulling out of MTA |
|||||
NEW CITY – Rockland County gets 62 cents in value for every dollar it pays to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Taxes taken from residents and businesses amount to $72.1 million and tolls and fares paid by customers amount to $37.9 million. The MTA operates commuter train service through Orange County into Rockland and south to New Jersey and Rockland officials on Wednesday suggested they talk to Orange County about a possible joint withdrawal from the MTA. A value gap analysis report for Rockland in 2010, compares the most current data with that from 2005. While there was a 25 percent increase in cost to Rockland over that five years, the value gap has remained the same at about $42 million. Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef said the report “provides the solid foundation and updated data we need to now explore the realities of withdrawal.” But, he pointed to costs and if the county could go it alone. County Planning and Public Transportation Commissioner Thomas Vanderbeek said that with current challenges before it, including replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the county’s current financial woes, it should not pursue withdrawal from the MTA by itself. Instead, he suggested Rockland share the report results with Orange County and explore the possibility of a joint action. |
