State Senate confirms new commissioner of DHSES

ALBANY - The New York State Senate unanimously confirmed Jerome Hauer as Commissioner of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES).

DHSES includes the Office of Counterterrorism, Office of Cyber Security, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Office of Interoperable and Emergency Communications, and the Office of Emergency Management. The Division is responsible for helping to prepare for and respond to terrorism and other man-made and natural disasters.

"I have repeatedly said that we must have the best state emergency management operation in the country, and with this confirmation, we have the right person to make that a reality," said Governor Andrew Cuomo. "Disaster response and homeland security are literally a matter of life and death, and Jerry Hauer has the experience and the record to create a statewide network of emergency responders to keep New Yorkers safe. I thank Majority Leader Skelos, Speaker Silver, and Senators Ball, DeFrancisco, Addabbo, and Krueger for their expeditious review and I congratulate Jerry and welcome him to my administration. "

Hauer brings almost three decades of experience in the public and private sectors, the majority of which was focused in the areas of security and emergency management. Mr. Hauer is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Hauer Group, a consulting firm that provides customized emergency management solutions to public and private clients around the world. Prior to starting the Hauer Group, Mr. Hauer served as a Co-Chair of the homeland security practice of Fleishman-Hillard Government Relations.

"I am honored to be confirmed by the New York State Senate and thank the Governor for this opportunity to work for the safety and security of New Yorkers”, Hauer said.  “Our state deserves an effective and efficient emergency service and homeland security operation that is ready to respond at a moment’s notice. This department provides countless vital services like fire safety and prevention and flood rescue teams, and I look forward to working with the fine men and women who have dedicated themselves to protecting the public safety of all New Yorkers."
