Foreign lottery scam warning

KINGSTON – The Ulster County District Attorney’s Office Division of Consumer Affairs is warning residents against responding to foreign lottery solicitations received in the mail or from a telemarketer.

Several residents recently reported receiving calls from the 876 area code assigned to the island of Jamaica; however, the calls appear to be coming from within the US, the DA’s office said.

The caller claims to be representing lotteries from Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain.

The DA’s office said real lotteries do not ask people to pay a fee. If a lottery solicitation is received in the mail, turn it over to the local postmaster, the office said.

Unwanted telemarketing calls should be reported to the National Do Not Call Registry at 1-888-382-1222.
