Mostly minor injuries in upstate bus crash

LAKE GEORGE - A charter bus from Montreal, Canada, crashed with 30 people on board - the driver and 29 passengers. The collision took place about 8:15 Friday morning on I-87 south between exits 22 and 23 in the Town of Lake George.

The bus, which had been traveling southbound, ran off the right side of the road, struck the guide rail, veered off the guide rail across the southbound lanes and punched through two more sets of guide rails in the median. The bus came to rest in the median with part of the bus in the left passing lane of the northbound side.

The driver, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected, landed on the ground of the median, and suffered numerous injuries.

Of the 30 passengers - all college students, only 6 complained of minor injuries. The Vanier College students had been traveling to New York City for the day.

Although the crash remains under investigation, it appears that the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. The driver, Christian Babin, age 56, of Warwick, Quebec, will be receiving tickets for various vehicle and traffic charges including one for not wearing his seat belt and Reckless Driving.
