One dead, two hurt, in crash involving two stolen cars

SCHODACK - State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on US Route 20 in the Town of Schodack, Wednesday evening, October 28. At approximately 7:40 pm, an officer with the Village of Nassau Police Department observed two vehicles travelling through the Village without license plates. The officer traveled westbound on Route 20 to attempt a traffic stop when the vehicles accelerated away from him. The officer then observed one of the vehicles, a KIA, lose control and strike an eastbound vehicle head on.

The KIA erupted into flames and the operator was pronounced dead at the scene.  He has not been identified.

The two occupants of the other vehicle, a Subaru, would have been burned if not for the first responders who used a truck to pull their vehicle away from the KIA and extinguish the flames that had started to erupt. The other vehicle without license plates, a green Jeep Cherokee, continued westbound on Route 20 without stopping at the scene.

Through subsequent investigation, it has been determined that both vehicles were stolen from the New Lebanon area that day.

The two occupants of the Subaru were seriously injured in the crash and transported to Albany Medical Center. They are Cara Warner, 21, of Nassau, the operator of the vehicle, and Danielle Hilton, 21, of Nassau, a passenger.

The investigation continues.  Any persons with information are urged to call the State Police at Schodack at (518) 732-4644.
