DEER PARK – Suffolk County Police are investigating the shooting death of a Bay Shore man who beat and attempted to rob an off-duty police officer early Tuesday morning. An off-duty Nassau County detective was attacked by two men who tried to rob him while he was at a 24-hour car wash on Lincoln Avenue in Deer Park. Erik Johnson, 24, of Bay Shore, and an accomplice approached the officer from behind and started beating him with an aluminum baseball bat. The man identified himself as a police officer as Johnson continued to beat him. The officer then fired four shots, striking Johnson once. Johnson was taken to an area hospital where he died. His accomplice was arrested several blocks away. The injured officer was admitted to the hospital for treatment of several contusions and internal bleeding. |
