Smoke detector giveaway in Buffalo

BUFFALO – In recognition of National Fire Prevention Month (October), Mayor Byron W. Brown and Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo announced the importance of fire safety and prevention, which will be emphasized through the distribution of free smoke detectors (and batteries) and “open houses” at designated Buffalo Fire Department firehouses.

“Fire safety is something everyone should know and practice,” said Mayor Brown.  “These open houses are just one way we are able to get the message across to our city residents to think smart and stay safe in case of fire.”

City of Buffalo residents who attend one of the open houses can receive a free smoke detector (note: supply is limited, so it is first come, first served).  Roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The Buffalo Fire Department “open house” schedule is as follows:

Saturday, October 24th
10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.          Engine 23
106 Collingwood at Bailey

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.          Engine 36
860 Hertel Avenue

12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.                        Engine 19
                                                209 Forest Avenue at Hawley
