California murder suspect arrested on Long Island

HAMPTON BAYS – A man wanted for killing a teen, eight years ago, in California, and who had been living on Long Island for four years, is in custody.

Early Monday morning troopers assigned to the State Police Riverside barracks, Riverhead, NY stopped a vehicle on Springville Road, near the Hampton Bays train station. The operator who was arrested for DWI, initially identified himself as Carlos Billamarin, 22, of Hampton Bays. During processing at the barracks, a fingerprint reply disclosed an associated wanted person under the name of Erick Morales, 25, who was being sought by the Daly City, California Police Dept. for the crime of Murder. The fingerprint match was from Morales's 2000 unlawful border crossing and arrest by the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Arizona. Further investigation disclosed that Morales and Billamarin were the same individual and Morales' s true age was 27.

Morales was charged in New York State as a fugitive from justice, a felony, false personation and DWI, both misdemeanors. He was arraigned today in the Town of Southampton Court.

The Daly City Police Department and the San Mateo, California Prosecutor's Office will be seeking extradition to California where his co-defendant happens to be on trial at the present time for the same 2001 crime where a 15 year old was stabbed to death.

Morales stated that after he fled California, he has never had any other police contact. He added that he's been renting a room at a Hampton Bays, private residence while working at a Watermill, restaurant for approximately four years.

Morales was also the subject of a Sept. 2008 America's Most Wanted episode where numerous tips were received and followed up on by the Daly City PD, all with negative results.
