Suffolk Heroin Task Force arrests made, drugs and weapons seized

HAUPPAUGE – Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota Monday announced that a four month multi-agency law enforcement crackdown on street sales of heroin in Suffolk County has resulted in more than 100 arrests including drug and weapons possession charges against a 57-year-old Port Jefferson man suspected of trafficking large amounts of heroin cut and packaged in New York City for street sales in Suffolk.

Spota, joined by Suffolk County Executive Steven Levy, Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, Major Walter Heesch, commander of Troop L, NY State Police, Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, and DEA Assistant-Agent-In-Charge Joseph Evans, said the execution of 11 search warrants resulted in the seizure of four thousand bags of heroin with a street value of $400,000 were seized along with felony amounts of oxycodone, vicodin, xanax and methadone.

While the task force’s mission was to focus on street sales of heroin, detectives developed information that resulted in the arrest of a large supplier of heroin, Alex Vavas of 84 Pine Hill Road in Port Jefferson.
