Buffalo’s Houghton Pool shelter house reopened

BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown Wednesday announced the reopening of the Houghton Park Shelter House.  The Shelter House, which serves as locker rooms and bathrooms for the Houghton Pool, has been closed since 2007 because of a fire, which caused extensive damage to the interior of the building.

“It’s important for our residents to have the opportunity to use facilities like the Houghton Pool Shelter House and enjoy the full benefit of these city parks amenities during the summer,” said Mayor Brown. “We have made it priority to invest in facilities like the Houghton Pool Shelter House, improve our parks infrastructure and enhance the quality of life benefits our residents get from coming to city pools like the Houghton Pool in Stachowski Park.”

The city’s Department of Public Works Division of Buildings has spent approximately $300,000 on this project.  Work included:

  • removal of asbestos and any fire-damaged material
  • painting of exterior trim
  • installation of glass block windows to replace old casement windows
  • installation of new exterior doors
  • installation of new garage doors for park storage garage
  • installation of new plumbing in men’s and women’s locker and shower rooms and bathrooms
  • installation of all new electrical service, plugs and switches
  • installation of all new exterior lighting
  • painting of all interior doors, walls, ceilings and floors
