Two brothers arrested for stealing copper cable

YAPHANK – Suffolk County Police have arrested two brothers for the theft of braided copper wire at the Long Island Power Authority right-of-way in Yaphank. That is where high tension power lines are located.

Officers were returning to headquarters when they noticed a vehicle backed into the right-of-way with its trunk open. The officers found two men loading braided copper wire into the back of their vehicle. They had unrolled it from one of several spools belonging to LIPA.

William Berketis, 37, of Patchogue and Steven Berketis, 23, of Copiague, were each charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree.
