Two probable cases of swine flu in Suffolk County

HAUPPAUGE – Suffolk Health Commissioner Dr. Humayun Chaudhry Thursday offers detailed about one new probable case of Swine-Origin Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Yesterday, the State Department of Health announced one probable case of the virus in a Holbrook man.

The man, a 50-year-old who works at St. Francis Preparatory High School in Fresh Meadows, Queens, experienced flu-like symptoms on Sunday.  He visited Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson on Wednesday, April 28, 2009, for testing. Results were sent to the NYSDOH lab for further testing to determine a positive identification of H1N1. The man was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

Suffolk County is continuing to monitor the situation closely. To date, the county and area hospitals have sent 25 samples to the state health department for testing. Of those, two samples were probable cases for Swine-Origin Influenza A (H1N1) virus, and 13 were negative for Swine-Origin Influenza A (H1N1) Virus.  In addition, one sample tested positive for Influenza A (H3N2) Virus, this season's type of Influenza. The county is awaiting the results of nine samples.
