BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown Friday, along with University at Buffalo Law School Dean Makau Mutua, held a special celebration in honor of Black History Month and the many African-American men and women who have positively impacted the City of Buffalo.

“I am honored to be able to give recognition to so many great African-American residents of our city today,” said Mayor Brown.  “It is only fitting that we recognize current community members who are furthering the work done by previous generations.  From their participation in the Underground Railroad to their work with the Niagara Movement, residents of Western New York have always strived for equality and justice, and are very deserving of our city’s gratitude.” 

This year’s theme, “The Change Makers,” both celebrates the many historical contributions made by African-Americans and recognizes those contributions currently being made by African-Americans locally. 

Awards were presented to the following individuals and organizations recognized as “Change Makers” in the City of Buffalo: Arts Award: Barbara Glover, Daryl Rasuli; Business Award: The Jeremiah Partnership, Mandela Markets; Community Activist Award: Back to Basics, Stop the Violence Coalition; Education Award: Dr. Barbara Seals-Nevergold, Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram, Dr. Ronald S. Rochon; Health Award: Dr. LaVonne Ansari, Dr. Jonathon D. Daniels; Law Enforcement Award: Venita Evans, Cedric Holloway; Media Award: The Challenger, Doug Ruffin, Jr. 

The Mayor also presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to George K. Arthur, Arthur O. Eve, Agnes M. Bain and John E. Smith for their many years of dedication promoting equality.
