Two more West Nile mosquitoes on Long Island

HAUPPAUGE - The New York State Department of Health has notified Suffolk County that two additional mosquito samples collected on September 3 and 4, from Babylon and Brookhaven have tested positive for West Nile virus.

So far, the state Health Department has confirmed a total of 39 West Nile virus positive mosquito samples, and three EEE positive samples in Suffolk County so far this year.  In addition, a total of 62 birds have tested positive for West Nile virus in the county this year.

Keeping in mind that the mosquito season does not end until November, Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, is asking the public to continue to be vigilant with regard to eliminating any standing water on their property in an attempt to get rid of the places where mosquitoes breed.

Make sure that your window and door screens are in place and in good repair; eliminate standing water from around your home and place of business; minimize the time you spend outdoors between dusk and dawn when most mosquitoes are found in greatest numbers; wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when you have to be outdoors for extended periods of time; and consider the use of a mosquito repellent containing DEET when it is necessary to be outdoors in mosquito infested areas.
