ISLIP - The State Comptroller’s office will audit the Town of Islip’s finances over budget and spending practices, with some possible issues dating back to 1989, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced Wednesday.

“I grew up in a working-class family on Long Island, so I understand the challenges that come with these difficult economic times,” DiNapoli said. “Whether you’re striving to get ahead or struggling to make ends meet, every dime counts. That’s why the Town of Islip has to ensure that every tax dollar is spent wisely and spent properly. Today, I’m here to let you know that our audit team will conduct a thorough, professional and fact-based review and help Town officials do just that. Every dime counts, even if you have to go back to 1989 to find it.”

DiNapoli thanked Town officials for calling to his attention to and raising concerns about the financing practices of capital projects dating from 1989. DiNapoli said the audit would review these issues among other things, including the Town of Islip’s financial condition; purchasing; cash management; claims processing; payroll; and, plans to upgrade its computer systems and software applications.
