Jury convicts Medford teen of murder during burglary

HAUPPAUGE - A Suffolk County jury has convicted a Medford teenager accused of shooting an East Patchogue homeowner to death.

Terraine Slide, 17, will be sentenced September 4.   The Suffolk County jury deliberated five hours and convicted the defendant of murder in the second degree, first degree burglary and second degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The victim, Carleton Shaw, 38, was remodeling a bathroom in his house at 948 Amsterdam Avenue on May 8, 2007 and didn’t hear Slide and four other teens enter his home to commit a burglary.   Shaw encountered the group of teens in his backyard as they were leaving his house. Slide fatally shot him once in the chest with a .22 caliber handgun.

Neighbors found Shaw, with his three-year-old son asleep on his chest, approximately six hours after the shooting.

The victim worked as a line cook at Chili's Grill and Bar in South Setauket, John Harvard's Brew House in Lake Grove, and TGI Friday's in Farmingville.
