Fallen Nassau Police detective honored

ALBANY - Governor David Paterson Friday announced that the Merrick Road bridge overpass in Nassau County will be renamed in honor of fallen Nassau County Police Department Detective Kathleen Reilly. The bridge is located in the Village of Freeport, near the location where she was killed, and will now be referred to as the “Detective Kathleen M. Reilly Memorial Bridge.”

Detective Reilly was killed in a traffic accident on December 25, 1967, while helping a distressed motorist on the Meadowbrook Parkway. In addition to becoming the first woman in history to be appointed to the Nassau County Police Department, she was also the department’s first female detective. She was also the first female police officer killed in the line of duty in the State of New York.
