SHIRLEY - Suffolk County Executive Steven Levy, District Attorney Thomas Spota, County Legislator Kate Browning, Police Commissioner Richard Dormer and Sheriff Vincent DeMarco were joined by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian Foley and civic and community leaders from Shirley, Mastic and Mastic Beach to highlight the successes of another phase of the county’s Operation Impact concentrated law enforcement. The latest six-week phase of Operation Impact, conducted during April and May, yielded 248 arrests (on 396 charges), five guns confiscated, 940 vehicle and traffic summonses -- and with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Tax Crime Unit also resulted in 15 arrests and fraud charges relating to Department of Social Services, HUD and Section 8 housing programs as well as the STAR property tax reduction program. “This latest operation is part of our ongoing, enhanced effort to work with the communities of Shirley and Mastic to address their concerns about crime and the quality of life in their neighborhoods,” said Levy. “The multi-agency, multi-layered approach not only has targeted street crime, which threatens our every day safety and tranquility, but ‘white collar’ crime, which threatens our property value by placing a greater tax burden on those who play by the rules.” |
