Jury convicts Coram man of 2007 slashing

RIVERHEAD - A Suffolk County jury has convicted a Coram man, Clifton Seymore, of attempted murder for slashing his girlfriend last year in the yard of a home on Lincoln Street in Riverhead.

After a three week trial, Seymore, 23, of 20 Erna Drive, was convicted Wednesday evening of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, aggravated criminal contempt, criminal contempt in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

Seymore faces 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 2.

On June 23, 2007, Seymore slashed the throat of his girlfriend Brittany Hughes, 20, severing her jugular. He fled the scene but surrendered later at Riverhead police headquarters.

Hughes, who testified during the trial, underwent emergency surgery at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Seymore is incarcerated in the county jail in lieu of $1 million dollars cash bail.
