Bay Shore man sentenced for 2006 sex assault

HAUPPAUGE - A Bay Shore man convicted of attempted rape and other sex crimes was sentenced Monday in Suffolk County Court to 22 years in prison.

After deliberating one day, a jury convicted Javier Hernandez for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in August 2006.  The victim testified during the weeklong trial last month.

Hernandez, 32, was arrested as a fugitive in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 11, 2007.

The defendant was found guilty of two counts of first degree criminal sexual act, one count of attempted rape first degree, one charge of first degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
